If this sounds familiar, and cannot tolerate CPAP, there may be another option for you. Continuous positive air pressure mask (CPAP) has long been considered the gold standard in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. It is effective when worn properly and used consistently. Based upon the severity of your condition it may be the best option. For the majority of patients however, there is a simpler solution that will be easier to use.
For those patients that cannot tolerate the sensation of a mask on their face while sleeping, have allergies to the components of the CPAP, or just can't seem to sleep on their back throughout the night, mandibular repositioning appliances may be a better alternative.
I began working with dental sleep medicine patients over a decade ago while on active duty in the United States Navy. As you can imagine, many of our sailors and marines have obstructive sleep apnea. Given the demands of their duties, CPAP was not always a viable option. We found that because mandibular repositioning appliances are small, easily transported and maintained, and are very durable, more of our patients were able to use them.
CPAP works, but it can also be a very isolating method of treatment. Our goal is to provide effective care that puts you back in control of your life. So many of our patients have shared their experiences with CPAP. We've had college students who were avoiding sharing a dorm room because they couldn't even consider wearing a CPAP at school. So many other individuals reported having separate rooms from their spouse because the sound of the CPAP was disturbing. Fishing trips, golf weekends, trips away with extended family....so many people avoided these events because they thought CPAP was their only option. Traveling is another concern for my patients. Commuting on a train or long flights used to be a source of concern. Getting through airport security is challenging enough. For my patients having to carry their CPAP (because they couldn't risk it getting lost with their luggage) on flights was aggravating. They couldn't use it on the flight and didn't want to be embarrassed by snoring loudly on the plane. Now they can carry their device in their pocket and it can be easily worn while they travel.
Our mission is to provide you with a proven alternative to CPAP that you and your entire family can live with easily. We want our patients to live their lives happily and productively.
We genuinely hope this website is a helpful resource to you in learning more about your options, our practice, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea conditions and treatments. We look forward to helping you and your family. The first step to a better night's sleep is to schedule an appointment.
